It's amazing how fast emotions can change. Just in one split second my Dad's mood changed from calm and light to panic, and it's all due to my visa situation. I took him out for dinner at Zolo Grill because hey guess what it's his birthday. He had a few double shots of 'patron' tequilla before making his way into some roasted duck. Talk about delicious. By the way that was a 160$ meal and a huge tip too...making that a grand total of 200$. I'm not rich, but I'll spend a little money to try a new place to eat and let my Dad enjoy himself a little. Maybe the total of 60$ in alcohol on our bill came with some consequences hours later....at my fucking house.
When we come home, there was some epic karaoke that he was craving and then he called up his friend in Beijing. He called him up because my letter of acceptance and JW-202 form from the Chinese Ministry of Education has not arrived yet. Not to worry, this is a normal situation that my study abroad group and every other student trying to study in China face. Because of my delayed reaction to the rise of the situation my Dad decided to flip out. I was calm or apathetic in his eyes. To him, I should've been stressing out and pulling out my hair because of the uncertainty that the documents will arrive on time. I learned to accept the situation at hand, but remain optimistic.
He wasn't going to let that fly.
"Why aren't you worried? God I have to do everything for you, we have to call places and you don't take any responsibility for your program, why haven't you contacted anyone?"
"I did, I've been taking care of this problem since it arose, which was in March."
"CAN'T YOU TELL THEM (CIEE) to hurry it up?? We have a special circumstances."
"I can't tell them to expedite anything, they have no control over how fast the documents are processed, it's the Chinese.."
"I can't believe that you don't care about this, I am so done with your American ways when it comes to situations like these, you're so apathetic, you and your brother..I'm so done with you. "
....Love you too Dad.
